What is a Metric in Google Analytics?

In Google Analytics, a Metric is a quantitative measurement. It is the “how many” or “how much” of your data. While a Dimension describes an attribute (like a user’s city), a Metric is always a number, percentage, or ratio.

The Simple Rule: If you can count it or calculate it, it’s a Metric.

Key Metrics You Should Know

Metric What it Measures Why it Matters
Users Unique individuals visiting your site. Shows your actual audience reach.
Sessions Total number of visits (trips). Measures overall traffic volume.
Engagement Rate % of sessions that were interactive. Best indicator of content quality.
Key Events Completed valuable actions (sales, etc). Tracks your business success.

Why Tracking Metrics Matters

  • Remove Guesswork: Make decisions based on real numbers rather than feelings.
  • Identify Problems: Spot exactly where users are dropping off in your sales funnel.
  • Optimize Spend: See which marketing channels are actually making you money.

Pro-Tip: Don’t get overwhelmed. Pick 3 “North Star” metrics that align with your business goals and focus on those first.
